Uruguay Approves Accession to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT)

On June 11, 2024, the Senate of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay unanimously approved the country’s accession to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). This follows the approval by the Chamber of Representatives on June 4, 2024.
Uruguay’s accession to the PCT represents a major milestone for the country’s patent system. It provides inventors, entrepreneurs, and companies with an essential tool for protecting their innovations internationally. The decision also strengthens Uruguay’s strategy for global integration and its positioning as a regional hub for innovation and knowledge-based industries.
The next step is the formal promulgation of the PCT by the Executive Branch, followed by the deposit of the instrument of accession with the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). In the months to follow, local regulations and practices will be aligned with PCT standards.
It is worth noting that Uruguay’s accession includes a reservation with respect to Chapter II of the Treaty (International Preliminary Examination), as permitted by Article 64(1).
We will continue to provide updates on key developments and implementation dates regarding the PCT in Uruguay.
